Breaking the Silence | A Journey of Healing and Hope

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on the stories of survivors, stories of pain, resilience, and ultimately, healing. For years, I have shared my own journey, not to dwell on the past, but to offer hope to others who may still be struggling in silence. My story is one of God’s protection, redemption, and the strength to rise from the ashes of trauma.

At just 17 years old, my life changed forever. While on a break during my shift at Burger King, still grieving the recent loss of my father, I was abducted at gunpoint and assaulted by three men. In those terrifying moments, I thought my future was over. But God had other plans. He sustained me, covered me, and gave me the strength to keep going. Less than 48 hours later, I returned to school – not because I had processed what had happened, but because I refused to let that trauma steal my future.

In the years that followed, I realized that breaking the silence was a vital step in healing, not just for me, but for others who had suffered in silence. That realization led to the first Break the Silence event in 2016. It was a sacred space where survivors, both women and men courageously shared their stories. Licensed therapists were there to provide support, and the atmosphere was one of freedom, encouragement, and enlightenment. We discovered that in sharing our pain, we found healing. In speaking our truth, we reclaimed our power.

Psalm 30:11-12 (NLT) perfectly reflects my journey:

“You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy, that I might sing praises to you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever!”

For so long, my heart carried the weight of that night, but God never intended for me to remain in mourning. He exchanged my sorrow for joy, my silence for a voice, my pain for purpose. Today, I live in that truth, using my voice to remind others that healing is possible, joy can be restored, and God is always near.

Breaking the silence is not easy. Fear, shame, and stigma often keep survivors in the shadows. But I believe with all my heart that silence only benefits the oppressor, while truth sets the captive free. If you are a survivor, know this:

You are not alone. You are seen. You are loved. And your story is not over.

As a Faith Empowerment Coach, I am committed to helping others navigate their pain and step into the fullness of God’s healing. If you are carrying the weight of silence, I encourage you, when you’re ready, to take that first step. Find a safe space, a trusted person, or a community that will embrace you with love and grace.

This Sexual Assault Awareness Month, let’s commit to breaking the silence, supporting survivors, and standing for healing and justice. Together, we are stronger.

If you need support, reach out to a trusted friend, pastor, therapist, or advocacy group. You are not alone, and healing is possible.

Love,
